Story
A mermaid's jewel wrapped up in a mysterious black opal oval cabochon rests on the finger. This phantasmagorical shapeshifter of an opal possesses colors at great depth ranging from peacock green to ember orange and bee yellow.
At 7.5 carats in weight with proportions of 19 mm by 14 mm, the cabochon shape lends itself to a window into its colorific interior. In certain lighting situations the surface of the swirling gem shows as polka-dotted chunks of color and depth.
The glittering surround is made up of forty-seven (47) rose cut diamonds of .005 carats each placed side by side for a total weight of .235 carats (I-K color; SI1-3 clarity). The animated color play of the opal is accented by the soft shimmer of an embrace of diamonds. The rose gold setting is of 18k gold.
Please note the closed back setting engraved in italics with “Hen'ry Rogers, Esq. Ob 18 Sept 1779, Oet 59”. This statement translates as Henry Rogers, Esquire passed on the 18th of September in 1779 at the age of 59. Shoulders are incised with a simple engraving. The opal has been added in recent years to this elegant mounting of 1779.
