Story
The giving of commemorative medals and award medallions is a standard practice for the recognition of a job well done or for a performance par excellence. An honor indeed which serves both giver and receiver. We can trace this practice to the emperors of Rome who bestowed such for military accomplishments as well as athletic prowess.
This striking sterling and blue enamel medallion is representative of an award given by the English Portsmouth Royal Counties Agricultural Show of 1925 in which a parade of “magnificent beasts ranging from big cart horses to huge bulls” are shown in their championship form led along by their owners.
This show has been attended by British Royalty since the Victorian years as Prince Albert was instrumental in establishing the Royal Counties Society. The sterling silver award features a high relief image of the full profile of a draft horse bounded by a royal blue enamel surround with a silver banner stating “Royal Counties Agricultural Show~Portsmouth 1925”. A silver leaf garland with attached bale surmounts the medal and an ornately engraved base grounds the piece.
