The gemstone spinel comes in a variety of colors including red, pink, purple and even blue. Many of the rubies which are featured in crown jewels have spinels mistakenly set as rubies. Eventually recognized as its own species, this stone has been coveted by jewelers as a gem easily integrated in the creation of a beautiful treasure. Actually quite scarce, their beauty if often enhanced by their clarity, usually finer than their red ruby counterparts.
This example shows an oval faceted spinel of 2 carats with dimensions of 9 mm by 6.4 mm. The gem has a translucent purple hue with just a touch of blue making it a complementary match for its 14k yellow gold mounting. A crown setting gently caresses the luscious purple stone with a multi-claw embrace. An Edwardian era gem and crown has been placed in a modern V mounting to display its characteristics to their best advantage.
