Story

To have expertise with precious gems is a long and extensive process. Knowledge regarding stones is not as stringent or drawn out. Here is a tidbit which will add to your data base of gemstone info. The carat weight of a stone is based on weight…not on its length, width and height. Although the dimensions of several gems may be the same, weight is based on the different atomic weights of the elements composing the stone. Opals, such as the one featured here are less dense and are light in weight. Consequently, if the same sized gem were a sapphire, its weight would be almost twice that of the opal.

Here we have a faceted fire opal of an estimated 2.4 carats with dimensions of more than 10 mm by more than 9 mm. This type of opal is prized for its vivid overall color – fiery and fabulous and bright orange, this stone does not display as dull and murky as many of is clear vivid and alive with coloration. Faceted in a modified cushion cut, it rests centered upon a mounting of icy cool platinum.

Date: Circa 1970.
