Story

Acrostic jewelry is typically sentimental in nature. This genre of jewelry reflects the feelings of love, friendship or loss. Legend has it that acrostic items, i.e., where the first letter of the gemstone is used to spell out a name, word or short phrase emerged in France around the late 18th or early 19th century. The trend soon found its way to England and America with gems speaking the language of the heart and soul.

This 15k yellow gold Victorian example is only the second piece of a “DEAREST” acrostic we have had in twelve years. Often reproduced, this ring is a true antique. Set with all natural gems, a diamond, two emeralds, an amethyst, ruby, sapphire and turquoise combine their first letters to send a coded message of DEAREST. The stones are set in a gallery with a wonderful flower-like motif. Open work design gradually segues into a smooth shank of warm antique gold.

Date: Circa 1880.
