Story

A gem cut we do not often see is that of the buff top. It typically has a smoothly domed or cabbed crown and a faceted pavilion. The top can be slightly convex and the back faceted. This style of cut is used to bring out the color in a colored stone such as the aquamarine featured in this circa 1930 ring. With a smooth and curved top, the natural aquamarine of an estimated 2.2 carts is well suited to the 14k white gold setting. Set east and west, the pastel hue displays an underlying glow against the iciness of the white gold mount. Pierced open work and foliate designs on the setting lets in additional light to enable the gemstone to truly “light up” on the hand.

Date: Circa 1930.
