Story

We have come to associate the pendeloque and the girandole form as examples of antique earrings yet the ancient hoop variety far precedes those familiar shapes. Here we have that expressed in an 18th century Italian earring in the tradition of the French poissarde and the large Iberian earrings.

Superb in its design, the very large 10k rose gold and silver hollow work displays one of the geometric shaped hoop earrings typical of Italy during this period with each of the elements bearing a strong resemblance to a three-dimensional lozenge configuration. A leaf and floral “garland” set with three (3) rose cut accent diamonds is suspended as an arc between the golden hoop.

Date: Late 18th century.

For similar earrings see plates 4 to 6 in the book "L'ornamento preizioso" edited by Arnoldo Mondadori. From an exhibition in Rome in 1986 at the Museum: Museo Nazionale delle Arti e Tradizioni Populari.
