Story

Moments in history come and go and before the advent of photography memories of these events were either depicted in literary journals and paintings of the day. Occasionally an object is unearthed which was crafted around the time of the event and accurately represents what occurred. Such is the case with this circa 1820 fob pendant. Representing the Colonne Vendôme, this 18k yellow gold with green hard stone agate base locket fob charm is superbly constructed. The details of the piece have been painstakingly copied from the original column.

Originally erected in 1810 by Napoleon I, the column displays majestic four eagles guarding a highly adorned base, a veneer of spiraling bronze plates and at the pinnacle, a statute of Napoleon I dressed in as a Roman emperor replete with laurel crown and sword. When the Emperor, uh fell out of favor around 1814 his statue was removed and for a while a flag bearing the Fleur-de-Lys took its place. At times the flag did not fly and there was no surmount atop the monument until 1832 when Louis Philippe erected a statue of Napoleon dressed in familiar overcoat and tri-cornered hat.

None-the-less, this particular piece is reflective of but a small yet decisive moment in time as its displays the very small period of time between 1814 and 1820. C’est très magnifique.

More historical Notes: Around 1863 with politics and fashion being what they were and still are, Napoleon III had a copy of the original statue of Napoleon in Roman garb mounted at the top. Now, do not fret because in 1871 the entire column and state were destroyed only to be re-constructed in 1874 in its original 1810 form. The monument we see in Paris today. Whew!
