Story
Images of cherubs have graced the walls of the world’s museums and the ceilings of great chapels throughout history. A pendant of 18k yellow gold employs the iconic figure as the main subject. Reminiscent of the cherub incorporated in the painting “Sistine Madonna” by the high Renaissance artist Raphael, this angel-like representation shares that contemplative countenance.
Gold scrollwork of the pendant takes on the likeness of a rose or Catherine window. This is a type of round or circular window found in Gothic architectural style edifices. As the piece is French in origin, it is not unexpected that the tracery backdrop which uses overlapping arcs akin to flower petals is similar to the forms used in Northern France.
The open work design, a marvelous counterpoint for the intense emotional expression conveyed by the winged figure, brings forth a lightness and sense of open relief. Please note to the reverse engraved in italicized script is “Marie Claude 2. 4. 1947”.
