Antique Diamond Tassel Motif Earrings
Throughout the ages tales have been told and epics written about the heroes and heroines who have embarked on quests rift by peril in search of true love, everlasting glory or simply that of great riches and treasure. All of us are aware that “the holy grail” of the antique jewelry world is antique diamond earrings. One of the most elusive of all is the matched pair that has remained with their original design intact over the passage of time. And now with The Fates (our Grecian sisters who control human destiny) having smiled upon us, The Three Graces are delighted and extremely pleased to bring you this spectacular pair of Victorian diamond tassel earrings.
The ancient Greeks believed diamonds were the tears of the gods and these ear pendants bring that grand statement to fruition. Refined yet dynamic in appearance, the form and the fluidity of style are integral to the intrigue and beauty inherent in these earrings. Seventy-seven (77) old mine and old European cut diamonds have been set into each earring. All are clear and brilliant and in excellent condition. The diamond weight is approximately 1.75 carats in each earring for a total diamond weight of 3.4 carats. Entirely cut by hand, these early diamonds have a subtle appeal, appearing both rich and understated at the same time.
The shape is superb; with elegance in design they have been crafted in three sections to emphasize grace and movement. The surmount, a foliate cluster of gems radiating around a larger centered stone, suspends a middle diamond to which is attached a half dome shaped articulated drop further suspending a fringe of tassels set with diamonds. Each is placed within silver in a Georgian revival setting; incorporated is a fascinating ridged setting and modified pinched collet/claw mounts. The backs are high carat gold over silver. They are open back and glitter shamelessly while retaining more of a softer feel given the silver work. Balanced to perfection, the movement itself glistens with the gentle swaying articulation of three elements and five tassel fringes.
Measuring a grand 2 inches in length by approximately ½ of an inch in width at the cluster and a bit less at the tassel (5.1 cm long by 1.3 cm wide). Condition is very good; old repair on reverse at top of tassel that is invisible from the front; light wear to ear wires and to underside as expected with age and use; otherwise fine with nothing of consequence. Dating to circa 1880. Only time can add to the unparalleled allure and sparkle that antique diamond earrings hold for now and forever.
