Art Deco Mughal Emerald Diamond Ruby Pendant
The style we have come to know as Art Deco was influenced by a number of factors. Its inspirations often came from India, Asia and Egypt. From the late 1920s through the 1930s the jewelry houses of Cartier and Van Cleef & Arpels began to incorporate old Indian Mughal jewels into their own innovative and original pieces of jewelry.
The Mughal style (late 1500s to 1850s) is the one we associate with the opulent display of wealth with lavishly designed gem-laden jewelry and the exotica of a Mughal emperor’s furnishings. The carving of gems, especially emeralds is a distinctive characteristic of the gems of that empire.
Delicate and fine, this platinum pendant circa 1935 features what appears to be an old Mughal carved emerald from the 19th century or earlier. The drop shaped gem is an estimated 6 carats and is topped with a platinum cap with scalloped edge and transitional cut diamond bale.
The body of the platinum pendant is a mastery of gem and metal work with a transitional cut diamond clad in a platinum bezel suspending a triangular cut diamond. At each corner of the base is a series of four (4) single cut diamonds (eight diamonds in all) attached to a platinum semicircle channel set with ten (10) natural rubies with a baguette diamond at each terminal and centering the curve. The estimated diamond weight for the pendant is .45 carats.
