Georgian Gossamer Amethyst Cannetille Earrings
Cannetille is a decorative technique for jewelry in which tiny filaments of metal, typically that of gold are woven and spun into a variety of intricate forms which create a golden carpet. Cannetille ornamentation was at its height around 1820. Although the word cannetille is itself French in origin, it is believed that the technique was developed in the late Georgian period of England and was later adopted by the French.
As evidenced in these superb ethereal earrings of 18k yellow gold, the labor intensive technique which cannot be achieved today manifests itself in little beehives of gold, tiny spider-like rosettes or flowers and open loops within lace-like patterns of airy craftsmanship. The surmount or top element features an oval faceted natural amethyst in horizontal profile surrounded with the delicate gold filigree. A faceted pear shaped natural amethyst even matched in coloration is suspended within a teardrop configuration of the gossamer gold lace. In all, the four natural amethysts have a total estimated weight of more than 21 carats.
Date: Circa 1820.
Measurements: 2-1/8 inches (5.6 cm) in length by 3/4 of an inch (1.9 cm) in width. Weight of 14.3 grams (9.2 dwt) for the pair.
Condition: Excellent; later date expertly crafted ear wires and removable drop fittings.
Origin: Most likely English.
