19th C. Antique Essex Crystal Terrier Dog Ring
A large clear rock crystal has been cut en cabochon with a distinctly high dome. Hand carved on the flat underside in reverse intaglio is the figural representation of the head of a white colored terrier. The pronounced three-dimension trompe l’oeil image has been laboriously hand painted in polychromatic enamel. The exquisite detail of expressive brown eyes, perky ears and an overall engaging attitude adds charm and depth to this little Victorian wonder.
The crystal backed against the gold enhances the perception of depth of this “miniature painting under glass”. A scalloped surround of 18k yellow gold is set with eighteen (18) rose cut diamonds of an estimated total diamond weight of .18 carats. Most likely the piece was originally a stickpin and has been converted to a ring with a period shank of 14k yellow gold. The shaped and patterned shank has shoulders are appointed with an acanthus leaf motif.
Date: Circa 1880.
Measurements: 3/4 of an inch (1.8 cm) in length north to south on the hand and rises 3/8 of an inch (1 cm) in height off the finger. Weight of 8.1 grams (5.2 dwt).
Ring Size: US 7-1/2 (UK O-1/2; Int. Dia. 17.75; Euro 56 mm; Japan 15) and easily can be sized to fit most. Ring sizing information.
Condition: Very good for the crystal which is bright and clear; one rose cut diamond possibly replaced; previously a stickpin or similar piece now converted to a ring with an added period shank. Evidence of a former resizing visible upon close inspection or with magnification.
Note: Diamonds have not been removed from their mounts to preserve the integrity of the setting. All diamond weights have been approximated by measurement and formula and may vary from actual weights.
