Winter Wonderland - Akoya Pearl Necklace
Pearls are perhaps the world’s first gem. Nothing says timeless like a strand of pearls. Frequently referred to as the “queen of gems”, the pearl is brilliant and shiny with a great luster and transparency that few precious stones can echo. Considered to be the classic of the species, the akoya is a saltwater cultured pearl found in the waters of Japan and China. The larger ones are usually Japanese in origin.
This strand of forty-two (42) semi baroque is graduated in size ranging from 7 to 10 mm. Well matched in their cream color with overtones of cream, each pearl has been cultivated in the pincatada fucata martensii oyster and hand knotted with silk to create a secure strand lying flat against the skin. Virtually unmatched in splendor and beauty, the necklace is finished with a gorgeous mille grained platinum clasp set with seven (7) old mine cut diamonds with a total estimated diamond weight of .90 carats and a 14k gold slide catch.
Measurements: 15-3/4 inches (40.3 cm) in length when worn. Weight of 39.9 grams (25.7 dwt).
Condition: Excellent; light wear to pearls commensurate with age and use; one small diamond chipped visible with magnification.
Date: Early 20th century for the clasp; somewhat later for the pearls.
Note 1: All diamond weights are approximate as the stones have not been removed in order to preserve the integrity of the setting.
