Art Deco Sterling Lorgnette & Chain Necklace
Passes ARE made at those who wear glasses!..especially such stylish Art Deco ones in the guise of a lorgnette. First introduced around the turn of the 19th century, this visual aid was used for either distance viewing at the opera or for reading and always had some type of handle attachment.
This jazzy urbane pair is referred to as a “fold-out” type as the viewing lenses unfold from the protective case. When in closed position these hand-held spectacles were designed to be worn suspended from the attached necklace.
Fabricated from sterling silver, the ornate case is decorated with a marvelous Art Deco patterned surrounded accented with dots of sparkling marcasites. The surround enclosed sterling silver bezel set flowers and leaves made from various colors of glass and a composite material. The underside is richly hand engraved with scroll and curl designs.
The attached sterling silver chain echoes the varied color flower head motif interspersed among solid links of marcasites-set chain.
Measurements: Pendant is 2-5/8 inches (6.5 cm) in length including the fixed bale by 1-1/16 inches (2.6 cm) in width by 5/16 of an inch (0.8 cm) in depth. When extended, lorgnette measures 3-5/8 inches (66.2 cm) across and the lenses measure approximate 1 inch (2.5 cm) north to south. The chain has a length of 26 inches (66.2 cm) and is 5/16 of an inch (0.8 cm) at the widest point. Together the lorgnette and chain have a weight of 48.9 grams (31.5 dwt).
Hallmarks: An Austria mark for 935 silver (more than sterling in content) and for Vienna.
Condition: Very good; a few flowers have light wear as expected.
