Art Deco Butterfly Wing Brooch
Rhe wings of butterflies and colorful moths have been used in jewelry since the early 1800s. Traditionally English in origin, this genre became especially popular from the 1920s through the 1930s due to the success of Thomas L. Mott at the 1924 British Empire Exhibition.
A silver brooch mounting has been cast in the form of a stylized open winged butterfly. Nicely detailed with modified body and large antennae, the “wings” have been inset with the actual iridescent wings of butterflies and encased under glass. The double silver bezel is adorned with both a reeded and plain perimeter. The reverse reveals a closed silver back replete with original pin, stem and catch.
Condition: Very good; light wear to the glass visible from some angles; replaced pin stem.
Measurements: More than 1 inch (2.7 cm) in height by 1-9/16 inches (4 cm) at the widest point by 3/8 of an inch (1 cm) in thickness. This antique brooch has a weight of 8.1 grams (5.2 dwt).
Date & origin: Circa 1930 and is English in origin.
Overall Scale: Small to medium.
Historical Notes: This type of jewelry became fashionable in 1924 when the firm of Thomas L. Mott (TLM) exhibited at the British Empire Exhibition. Held in Wembley, London, the purpose of the BEE was to “to stimulate trade, to strengthen the bonds that bind the Mother Country to her Sister States and Daughter Nations, to bring all into closer touch, the one with the other, to enable all who owe allegiance to the British Flag to meet on common ground, and to learn to know each other.”
