Scarce Micro Mosaic Halley's Comet Brooch
Here we have an Italian micro mosaic of the First Century CE Roman Coliseum which was built as part of Caesar Augustus’ building plan combined with a mid 19th century English brooch celebrating the great celestial event of the Comet Halley.
Always petite, ever evocative, this scarce micro mosaic comet brooch is set into 10k yellow gold with its original pin stem, C-clasp and hinge. Placed within a slightly swirled blue glass surround, the mosaic remains beautifully intact with no missing tesserae. The colors continue to be rich and deep and clearly delineates sky, grass and ground. Quite an eye-catching piece with its prominent coloration, arresting subject matter and almost pristine state.
Condition: Very good to excellent with little of note.
Measurements: 1-1/8 inches (2.8 cm) in length and weighs 2.5 grams. The oval measures ¾ of an inch (1.9 cm) by 5/8 of an inch (1.6 cm).
Date & Origin: Circa 1835; comet fitting is English in origin; mosaic is Italian and set into brooch in England.
