Antique Dog Decanter Austrian c. 1900

$2,950 USD Item 10855

Figural spirit decanters have long been a mainstay in countries such as Germany, Switzerland and Austria. To discover one that is all original glass and silver gilt and remains intact down to the glass stopper can melt the hardened heart of an ardent collector.

A seated spaniel-type dog is the subject of this circa 1900 decanter. Realistically detailed from floppy feathery ears to the original brown and black glass eyes, the silver gilt metal head is hinged to reveal the glass stopper and pouring spout. The silver gilt rim around the neck of the glass bottle represents the pup’s silver collar. The silver gilt is original and has not been re-silvered. Furthermore, this is NOT a reproduction but an original piece of art. Please note that these figural heads were always cast in silver gilt and not in solid silver.

Measurements: 9-1/4 inches (21.5 cm) in height by 4-7/8 inches (12.5 cm) wide by 6-1/2 inches (17 cm) deep.

Condition: Appropriate to age and use, there is medium to heavy wear on the head with several crevices worn down and several more are worn smooth; minute dots of patina where base metal emerges. Under certain lighting the lid appears to be a bit golden from the brass foundation layer. A blue colored residue is evident on the stopper and on the interior of the neck of the bottle. The top closes but has risen up several millimeters from the edge. The glass decanter is in very good to excellent condition. Overall very fine and impressive. (Please refer to photos for details).

Hallmarks: "Made in Austria" on the back of the rim (see photos).

Date: Circa 1900

Origin: Austria
