Antique Essex Crystal Collie Dog Brooch
Varying levels of quality appear within 19th and early 20th century Essex Crystals. Often referred to as Cooke's crystals or reverse painted crystals, they range from later pressed glass imitations to the finest of hand carved and painted pieces. In the round, this collie dog stands with the finest. Deeply carved into rock crystal and adeptly painted, the dog appears to leap out of the crystal.
Circa 1900 - 1910, the rock crystal is backed with mother of pearl and then mounted into a streamlined 14k gold brooch. (A pendant bale could be added as well).
In excellent condition with little of note. Some photos show a glare but the crystal is very fine. It measures 7/8 of an inch across and 3/8 of an inch deep without pin stem (2.3 cm across and 1.2 cm deep without pin stem). Weight of 11.8 grams.
