Prismatic Colors: Deco Diamond Earrings
Old mine and old European cut diamonds spell out romantic notions of past grandeur and unabated passions. Here exceptional stones dazzle the imagination and the eye, each having its own remarkable ability to radiate with a rainbow of color. The top stones are old mine cuts of approximately .18 and .16 points. The lower gems are estimated .45 and .55 point old European cuts. Although differing in carat weight, the gems are very well matched.
Jewelers use the term “face up” to describe how stones read from the front; the gems are well balanced and matched from the front but some are deeper and consequently carry more carat weight. These are simply gorgeous with colors ranging from H-J and with clarity SI-VS1. With claw mounts, these lustrous diamonds are mounted in 18 k yellow gold over 18k white gold and still retain their original screw-type ear fittings. These earrings possess a high dispersion which brings out their brilliancy in a flashing and incandescent play of prismatic colors.
Measures more than 3/8 of an inch (1.1 cm) in length. The pair has a weight of 2.6 grams. Condition is good with some wear to the yellow gold plating at the center of each screw-back mount. One top stone has edge wear; the other top gem has a chip at a claw. Dates to circa 1930.
Note: All diamond weights and color grades are approximate since the stones were not removed from their mounts to preserve the integrity of the setting.
