Antique Victorian Gold Moth Novelty Earrings
The Victorians, particularly in the earlier years of their era (roughly 1840 to 1860) produced a most whimsical and varied selection of jewelry. Often the inspiration emanated from animal, bird, plant and insect themes. This pair of cannetille moth earring motif earrings is a rich and playful example of that vision.
Of high 18 carat gold, the body of the moth is repoussé and the wings, drop and top mount are all spun and twisted wire work. Each measures 1-3/4 inches (4.4 cm) in length by just less than 15/16 (2.3 cm) of an inch in width. The pair weighs 5.1 grams. In excellent condition with original ear wires; some patina and light overall wear. Circa 1850.
