Story
In Victorian times, a new type of necklace appeared. It was a long chain with a decorative slide to adjust the length and its position. Usually one end had a dog clip fitting as this one does.
In this sterling silver example, the slide is a charming wise owl face with two garnet eyes. With a little push or pull, up and down it goes.
A sterling silver rolo chain of 56 inches long (a drop of 28 inches) plus the 3/4 inch long fitting hangs long and can be worn wrapped once or even twice.
There is a myriad of ways to wear this 19th century invention. The traditional configuration is pictured in one of the photographs. Many people don't realize how it used to be worn.
This is achieved by placing the chain over your head as usual, maintaining your hands on each side of the chain behind your head. Cross the chain over itself once. Then bring that section back over your head (back to front). Finally secure this into the dog clip and arrange the slide to your preference.
