Art Nouveau Nirvana: Demantoid Garnet Pendant
Demantoid garnets are quite rare; mined in the Ural Mountains of Russia from around 1850 to the First World War, these gems were considered to be an imperial stone of the Czar Nicholas II and a favorite of Peter Carl Fabergé.
From the era of Imperialist Russia, this pendant of 14k rose gold deviates from the typical opulence with its “simple” Art Nouveau design. Sinuous plant-like forms overtake sensuous and erotic curves with a thrall of dynamic rhythm which seems alive and restless yet evokes an asymmetrical balanced harmony.
Tendrils and leaves of rose gold are set with eighteen (18) faceted round cut demantoid garnets, two green pastes (which appear original to the piece), four (4) cushion cut diamonds with an estimated total weight of .40 carats and one faceted pear shape garnet.
We have purchased a very small collection of demantoid garnet pieces so please contact us for more information or watch the website over the next few weeks.
Date: Circa 1900.
Measurements: 1-7/8 inches (4.7 cm) in length including bale by 15/16 of an inch (2.2 cm) in width. Weight of 4.8 grams (3.1 dwt).
