A Grecian Rose - Georgian Lava Cameo Earrings
As we revisit the splendors of Pompeii, lava is used as the basis for these refined and symbolic earrings. Stone with hues reminiscent of a deep dense forest in shades of gray green is hand carved in the likeness of a Greek feminine profile with her ornate diadem, elaborate hair dressing and ropes of pearls. Below her image, a small rose and leaves, above her head another rose dangles and, on the top oval, one more in full flower. Symbolism abounds with meanings ranging from love and passion to that of purity and joy. Exceptionally fine carving distinguishes these of superior quality to many of the examples we encounter. Note the intricate details in the hair alone – with its ribbons and curls, the face with its aquiline nose.
The edge is a 15k gold border with an undulating scallop – one large wave and another smaller crest of gold. Open backed as is typical of larger stones, agates and the like. Of a medium long length just under 2-1/8 inches long by 5/8 of an inch in width (5.8 cm long by 1.6 cm wide). They appear to be weighty but are not; in fact they are quite light on the ear. Condition is very fine. Circa 1840.
