Novelty jewelry captures the imagination and delights the senses in wearable whimsy.
This is a solid 9k gold extendable pencil in the form of a miniature spinning top or a surveyor’s plumb. Plumbs are utilized by surveyors and heavy enough to create a true vertical line when suspended.
Telescoping and weighty (16 grams), it can be retracted or extended with a total of six fitted, nested parts.
Created in England in 1873 (September 12th of that year), it displays a registry mark.
Walter Thornhill was the designer and he and his firm were well known for their clever jewelry designs as well as other silver and gold items. See more under Measurements & More.
A few examples come up today, but usually in silver, so it is thrilling to present this one in gold.
On top, it is engraved Thornhill No. 2337 (their design number).
Please note that the tip where a lead would have been inserted no longer functions.
