From the former firm of Carter & Gough*, and still in amazing condition, is this dreamy enamel and 14k gold chain and matching locket.
It is the epitome of the Edwardian era's emphasis on meticulous fine details, delicate scale, and guilloché work, and a breathtaking reminder of the Gilded Age.
Guilloché is the technique of minimally scoring metal with designs, often termed engine turning. A machine was used to impress lace-like designs to surfaces, these were usually covered with translucent colorful enamels.
Indescribably beautiful, this work highlights pattern on pattern. In this case, central flowers or snowflakes rest atop circular concentric rings with a striking border and tiny dots between.
Another border frames the interior area in both creamy white and gold-hued enamel. Another slim blue patterned border encompasses the whole.
Opening at the side, this near wafer-thin locket appears almost untouched these last 125 years. It opens from a nearly imperceptible finger-nail slit and hidden hinge. Both front are back show off the same breathtaking patterns.
The removable chain is adorned with a tiny dog clip and nine enamel links of pointed cigar-shaped cylinders with a round one as well. Versatile, the chain can then be worn with other charms or pendants. Likewise, you can suspend the locket from a gold chain for a different look.
The necklace's coloration is a soft blue and contains hints of steely gray and as the light hits the glassy surfaces, refracts ice blue.
Typical of this style and period, the scale is petite to medium. Superlative.
