Fortunato Pio Castellani is a name worth remembering if you don't already hold it dear.
In the history of jewelry, this house, established in 1841 in Italy, is one of the most renowned. Making their mark for their archeological revival styles during the 19th century, their creations are still celebrated as the epitome of craftsmanship, design, and aesthetics, and thus highly collectable.
Most pieces are recognized for their superlative use of enamel and gold. They often draw upon Greek, Etruscan, early Christian, Egyptian, and even Indian and Middle East influences. Others tend toward the understated.
Sotheby's held a notable auction on December 6, 2006 of Castellani and also their rival Giuliano. The catalog, the Judith H. Siegel Collection, is breathtaking. The Three Graces has one copy for sale, just contact us.
In the catalog, on page 69, is an engraved silver bell, similar to this one offered for sale. It sold for $3600.
Circa 1880, the engraved letters have a most intriguing meaning, ‘I am enslaved by your eyes’, or "I am submitted to your eyes."
In the same sale, a large silver bell, and small gold bell were also offered. All of these are attributed to that house, although they are unsigned, as is this one.
This is replica of the small gold artifact that was uncovered during excavations in 1873 on Mount Esqualine in Rome. It was then purchased by Allesandro Castellani for their impressive antiquities collections.
The original gold bell was officially sold in the May 1884 Paris auction of Alessandro Castellani’s effects. A similar gold bell is housed in the British Museum (Room 47 - Europe 1800-1900, Display Case 11).
