Ultimately sentimental, memorial in nature, and endearing in its design, this gold fob seal has it all.
In 15k yellow gold and dating to circa 1840, the rock crystal base was hand carved in reverse with the motif of a single rose along with its spiky leaves and arched stems.
Above are the words, "Remember Me" (in reverse as this was intended for pressing into wax). The quartz is beveled at the edges, providing a refractive frame. (The final photo is reversed so that you can see the writing clearly.)
Beneath rests a plaited bed of auburn hair, completing the memorial fob or pendant.
Additional flowers adorn the ornate, medium- to large-scale jewel. One flower on the front and one on the back lie amid leaf-like designs and scrolling elements. Deeply chased, the work is an eyeful of aesthetically pleasing surface details.
The top is reeded ring large enough for many chains; the cap of the rock crystal provides more curlicues and a basket-rayed pattern with a stepped, linear frame.
