To depict night, an owl soars and the night's crescent moon floats above a landscape dotted with two trees upon two hills.

A diagonal band of hand-engraved patterns, and three fan shapes, are outlined by raised rose gold over silver.

Beneath, flowers and foliage are visited by a butterfly, symbolic of the daylight hours. The locket is sterling silver with touches of rose gold over silver.

Only the Victorians could evoke such poetry within jewelry. Opening on the left side. there are two inner compartments to cradle photographs, locks of fur or hair, or other whisper-thin mementos.

Plain, polished silver shows on the reverse. A sculptural original bale rests on top. Pure 1880s Victoriana.
