Story

INCREDIBLE MARKDOWN!

Two hand fans serve as the springboard for interpretation in this charming bird and wildlife motif Victorian brooch.

In 18k gold of three colors, rose, green, and yellow, along with touches of platinum, these are the artisans’ "paints" brought together in harmony for these Japanese influenced scenes.

A large heron dominates one fan, wading amidst reeds. A cattail arches over it with its realistic leaves. The wading bird shows off a belly and neck of platinum, yellow, and green wings, rose gold legs and beak, and a feathery crown of yellow. Textured green gold for the land transitions to platinum for the water.

On the other fan, two birds rest upon a curved branch, a butterfly hovers above, and leaves and another cattail fill the tableau.

Note how the jewelers alternated colors of precious metals for effects. Every leaf of a stalk of five varies from yellow, green, or rose. The birds’ bodies switch from rose to yellow. Notable details such as these are impressive on such a miniature scale.

The fans themselves are gracefully shaped, their sticks consummately rendered in rose gold. Their handles combine textured green and tips of rose gold. These are "tied" with yellow gold twisted wire to resemble rope or cord.
