Who can resist such a handsome dandy in his powdered wig en queue, his velvet teal frock coat, frilled lace shirt, and blushed cheeks?

Meticulously hand painted in watercolor, the backdrop to the gentleman of soft, puffy clouds adds to the overall romance of the image. The oval miniature portrait is surrounded by the original flat cut almandine (pink, purple hued) garnets set into silver.

Flat cut garnets were utilized during the 18th century, but occasionally decorated jewels from the earlier decades of the 1800s. Similar work was used in a miniature portrait sold by The Three Graces years ago of Queen Anne dating to circa 1705.

This miniature dates to circa 1780. After around 1790 powdered wigs quickly faded from favor and there was even an English tax on powder that hastened their demise.

The reverse is covered in a layer of rose gold. An original tube hinge and C clasp remains, along with a fold up/down bale allows this to be worn as a pendant. Just ask us to add a larger pendant bale if desired.
