Story
"Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin: yet I say unto you, that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these."
Forgo the superlatives for this antique cross needs no added hype. Singularly the finest cross pendant The Three Graces has had the honor to represent, it speaks for itself (and in person is even better).
Almost entirely handmade and in 18k gold, it is oversized at a total length of 3 13/16 inches. Siberian amethysts are appointed at each arm end of the Latin or Christian cross with an additional fancy shield-shaped placed at the center.
Note the symbolism of the 12 gemstones representing the 12 Apostles and the central stone representing Jesus himself.
A total of 9.35 carats of amethysts includes .55 carats for each of the deep and fiery rounds and 2.75 carats for the fancy cut.
Hand-done pierced work outlines lily flowers, also symbolic of Christ, as well as Mary and with a long history of meaning too weighty to list here. Wending their way throughout the front surface, leaves and blossom also display engraved details.
All the edges are open work of a continuous line in a Greek key motif.
From the Edwardian era around 1900, it is a blend of spiritual devotion, exceptional wearable art, and symbolism.
