The quality of Essex crystals quality ranges from the laudable to the crude. Those of superior carving and hand painting, down to those of pressed glass (not considered true Essex crystals but often termed as such), can hardly compare.
This one, engraved, inscribed, and dated on the back, exhibits the highest standards.
What should you look for? Several factors are important. The depth of the carving imparts a realistic quality. Almost like a hologram, those highly desired examples appear almost as 3-D in rendering.
Meticulous and realistic carving, with the same for the painting, are other critical factors. Multiple colors, precision of the tiniest details, in this case, eyes, nose muzzle and fur should all be easily discernable.
Naturally you want only those carved from rock crystal (not glass). And as always, condition as some have lost paint to the interior, or are chipped or damaged.
This Pekingese is a delight and seems to leap out of the rock crystal into your heart. From sculpting to coloring, the details stand out, even when observing from a distance. Extra special, the 14k gold setting has been created in a leash motif with a white gold dog clip and yellow leash handle at the other end.
