A.J. Hedges may not be as well-known as some Newark, New Jersey and other American makers of antique jewelry, but they should be.
Every piece (and there are not many out there) is characterized by a harmony of design and a refined air due to the superior workmanship.
Dating to circa 1900, this dragonfly brooch harbors influences of both the Art Nouveau and the Edwardian movements. In 14k gold, the front texture gleams with a subtle cast from the use of green gold that helps animate this charming insect.
Both wings and the abdomen, thorax and head possess that matte coloration. The antennae and legs were created in rose gold for contrast.
Four old European cut diamonds grace the top wing. Four blue sapphires the bottom wing, as well as one in the body. Two rubies serve as the eyes.
Redolent of summer, it is all original and in remarkable, nearly unworn condition.
