Letter writing was the email of the day during the 19th century (and prior). Sometimes people wrote to each other 2 or more times a day. And to secure that letter, this seal was created in gold and agate.
A bird, dove or carrier pigeon carved in intaglio to the agate surface. It flies across a landscape, in its mouth is a letter is being carried to it's intended. The words above, "Depechez Vous" in French, or hurry up, are all carved into the gem.
Frequently, in the 18th and early 19th centuries, the English spoke French and it is sometimes seen in jewelry of the period.
