Story

An 18th century jewel contrasts almandine garnets juxtaposed with natural baroque saltwater pearls to create an exceptional gold necklace.

In total, 97 flat cut almandine purple-pink garnets encrust the jewel. Cluster elements with subtle floral motifs utilize open areas along with scalloped textured edges to create a lacy look and fell.

In 18k gold, 17 natural saltwater baroque pearls dot the centers and outer edges of the largest panel. These range in size from 3 - 8 mm.

In the 18th or century, this would have been worn as a choker high on the neck and likely suspended at the ends by gauzy ribbons. Later, it was extended with 10k gold elongated oval links to a wearable length of 15 inches.

The largest sections suggest flowers that have centers of pearls and petals of garnets with sprays of gold and garnet-set leaves.

All the garnets are flat cut and just as its name implies, are possess broad flat tops with simple facets on around the edges. The gemstones are all set closed backed and foiled to bring brilliance to the stone since light cannot.

Typical of Southern European jewelry from provincial areas, many paintings of the day reveal similar necklaces.
