Story

Much of the Aesthetic and Victorian periods' silver pieces of jewelry revolve around themes taken from the natural world. Birds, insects, water scenes and the like were used as an inspiration for their designs.

Often tropical climes seemed to pique their interest with swaying palm trees and exotic birds gracing their creations. Putting oneself in their shoes, and in the climate of the British Isles where many pieces originated, it is easy to see why this imagery was chosen from such idyllic and temperate spots.

This oval two-photo locket, a golden palm tree and several more in the foreground and rise rest amidst grass. Above, a swallow soars aloft while a wading flamingo bird appears to consider the swallow's ease of flight. A mountainous isle is engraved in the background on the horizon.

The two birds are appliques of rose gold over silver. The grass and one palm tree-top are decorated in yellow gold over silver.

Scalloped and indented, the edge is striking and bold. The interior has two original frames and one original glass with one plastic new insert to hold your photographs or precious other mementos.

THE FINE PRINT

Due to the nature of antique & vintage jewelry, many diamond and gemstone weights are calculated by measurements, not removed. Actual weights are noted in the item's description. Grading of diamonds and gemstones may vary slightly when removed.

HONESTY

Being as honest as possible about the items we represent for sale is our ultimate goal! Our pricing is industry recognized as fair and equitable with value as the byword.

Date: Circa 1880.

Measurements: Length of 2 1/4 inches and 1 5/8 inches for the locket without two bale or silver orbs and 1 3/8 inches wide and 1/4 inch deep. Weight of 16.8 grams.

Condition: Excellent, very light wear to the back with one minute indentation and two to the front.

Origin: Most likely English.

Historical Note: On some antique jewelry, jeweler's marks are scratched into the interior or undersides of pieces (never maring the exterior beauty). In this locket, the Roman numerals VII are present upside down on the front inside and on the back interior. Usually these were used as an aid for assembling the finished pieces. These numbers aided the craftsman in identifying which pieces went where.
