From the maker Theberath & Co. of Newark, NJ and dating to circa 1905 comes this lyrical five-petaled natural freshwater pearl and sapphire brooch.

All in 14k yellow gold, the flower petals are formed of baroque freshwater pearls, their organic shapes an ideal representation for the intricacies of the natural world. At its center a round faceted sapphire of .07 carats. Its hue is that of a Ceylon or even Montana sapphire.

The goldwork forms curvaceous double circles around the flower and artful leaves off them stem are created in textured gold.

Many do not know that Newark, NJ., was a hotbed of jewelry production (along with Rhode Island) for much of the mid to later 19th century into the mid 20th. While the city started its road to jewelry production in 1801 with one firm, it grew to be a major influence on jewelry and its manufacture and supply. Many of the finest pieces were even sold in New York, San Francisco, Boston and other centers of society. Newark supplied a huge portion of the populace with its jewelry for over 150 years.
