Story

The Three Graces is pleased to present this antique circa 1870s Hancocks of London Holbeinesque pendant. Founded in 1849, Hancocks is renown as purveyors of some of the finest jewelry available to this day.

With a reputation for creating ravishing Holbeinesque jewelry, this agate enamel pendant adds to that already impressive jewelry archive. Very early in its inception, Hancocks was awarded a royal warrant from HRH Victoria who became a devoted client.

Holbeinesque jewelry is directly influenced by the Renaissance in overall shape and decoration. The generous sized banded agate surprises as a striking choice with its vertical band of blue white separating each half. Consistent with master craftsmanship and design, the visual band continues by orienting smaller agates to line up with this both below and above.

The central banded agate is 19 x 16 mm and mounted with an oval gold bezel. An additional twelve round half cabochons adorn the ornate surround, and another agate bead dangles below. Twelve rose cut diamonds are dotted throughout.

What is the most striking aspect? One wonders for each millimeter is carefully thought out and replete with balance of gem, gold and enamel. It is a joy to behold such a scarce jewel, pondering the bevy of jewelers that created this and the months of arduous work for this outcome.

The scalloped surround clearly is a tiny marvel. The use of black enamel for the ground, the gold showing through and the white flowers is purely breathtaking. The original enamel fitting suspense the drops and is covered with the same details.

The final dangle in itself is fine enough to wear by itself. Its teardrop surround holds three petite rose cut diamonds and below it a sphere with the front more black and white enamel and one floral bloom.
