Story

Thought to be first produced in Egypt, niello has a fascinating history dating back to ancient times. It is a process that produces minute decoration on a metal surface by having incised lines filled in with a black metallic amalgam.

The amalgam usually has a silvery gray-black hue and with a look that shimmers like no other metal. It was popular in Italy, France, Russia and other countries but since the 1700s, the demand has lessened. Although not widely produced currently it can be found in Thailand and in a few other locales.

This slide locket is Victorian, dating to the 1880s. Round and relatively flat, both sides display a checkerboard pattern. Rather than hinged, a slide locket pivots open.

It can be a repository for two photographs of other memento and is large in scale and comes with its original bale. Both inner rims are removable. All in 800 silver, it is European in origin.
