Story

MARKED DOWN!

A large, weighty decorative whistle of sterling silver was used by a military officer. In its new life, it is a chic fashion accessory to be worn and admired.

Most likely an officer and a gentleman from the King's Royal Rifle Corps would have donned this as their dress whistle and it still works perfectly.

Fully hallmarked for the year 1908 from Birmingham, it today makes a statement necklace par excellence. Generously sized, the details and construction rank as nothing short of impressive.

From its tapered shape and circular top, it transitions to an eight-sided central core and finial style tip. Acanthus leaf designs at the top and bottom portions all worked in organic motifs to perfection. Even the "O" fitting is ribbed and embellished.

There is a fitting that when depressed, releases the cover and the whistle slides out for use. When worn, no one would know it isn't a pendant that catches everyone's attention.

Created by the firm J.R. Gaunt & Sons, founded in 1884, they manufactured and produced military wares including buttons and badges as well as other fine silver wares.

From the private collection of the owner of The Three Graces purchased in 2007.
