The carving of gems is a science unto itself. There are very specific techniques and terms which are employed. Nicolo describes carving of striated gemstones, such as agate and onyx which leaves the top layer of a blueish-white color while allowing the black layer to show through giving the image of a silhouette.
An intaglio is when a design is carved into a surface such that it appears as a depression or negative image.
The historic Newark firm of Jones & Woodland has created a 14k yellow gold gentleman’s signet ring using that procedure and type of gem. Striking and powerful, an agate has been carved with a nicolo intaglio of a classical profile.
The thin blueish-white top striation of the agate acts as the background for the portrait which emerges from the black layer beneath. The carving is set in an ornate 14k yellow gold mount accented with neo-classical patterns and designs along the shoulders and sides. Not for men only! This man's or woman's ring is powerful and divine.
