Story
The British loved to give and receive awards, medals and honorarium for all sorts of activities ranging from chivalry to sports events. With the advent of leisure activities in the nineteenth century, any number of sports associations gave out awards and prizes for championship challenges.
Here is an example of an award medal for the finest Rabbit of sterling silver given for the “Selhurst Challenge Cup” in 1895. The round pendant features a central raised disc with the engraved image of a rabbit couchant (lying down) and banded with a twisted wire border.
The rabbit’s eye is rimed in black, as is his back. His front area all white for a charming and most adorable of bunnies
To the reverse a laurel wreath in high relief surrounds the perimeter. Enclosed within in hand engraving is 3rd with “H.A. Hughes 7 Sept. 1895”.
