Story
The carving of gem stones is an ancient craft. Traditionally rings set with incised stones were used for affixing one’s seal or signet upon a legal document. Over time these necessary objects shifted from function to form and were coveted as amulets and for personal adornment.
The moonstone was one of those stones which readily lent itself to carving. Here a 14k yellow gold mounting embraces a 1.5 carat moonstone all in a period Edwardian ring. The oval cabochon has been transformed with a cameo image of the face of a baby.
A charming and intricate carving, the details of the image almost rise from the surface of the gem due to its strong blue flash. A most sweet expression, the wide oval eyes and pursed mouth are crested with soft waves of baby fine hair.
