Story
Ask any jeweler today and they are bound to marvel at the workmanship of filigree (and its precursor cannetille). Tiny "threads" of gold or silver are spun into designs and shapes that almost defy belief.
Graduated open work spheres of silver each utilizes curlicues and arcs to define the space within. Light on the ear, long and dangling, they seem more akin to something only nature would be able to create.
A number of European countries specialized in filigree from France, The Netherlands, Italy, Spain and even Russia. Most production centered in provincial areas but with a burgeoning tourism industry, this also encouraged its production. Today the art is all but lost for the fineness and quality seen long ago.
