Story
Although this sterling silver medal depicts the left profile of a beagle, it is a medallion issued by the athletic club known as the Surrey Beagles. It was most likely presented for achieving second place in a sprinting event. The award features a relief engraving of a beagle against a textured silver backdrop with a robin’s egg blue enamel surround labeled in uppercase letters SURREY BEAGLES.
A pair of wings akin to those worn by the ancient Greek god Hermes who was said to be fleet of foot graces the apex with attached bale and fittings. The reverse is engraved with “100 YDS. CHAMP. 1937 2nd (as in second place) and S.G. KING”.
