Story
A magnificent sterling silver medal was crafted by the renowned English silver firm of Mappin & Webb. The award is from the National Pony Society, an organization started in 1893 under the auspices of the British Horse Society. Finely modeled, equine related images embellish both sides of the round award. The front realizes two mares and two yearlings in the foreground quietly standing upon a field against a backdrop of trees and bushes. At the bottom in upper case letters is “NATIONAL PONY SOCIETY”.
The reverse features a polo player wearing a traditional polo helmet and knee high boots. Upon his galloping pony he brandishes the polo stick in one hand, double reins in the other and he sights the ball ready to be strike. Engraved below the representation is “Miss Joan Leigh's Flash, Royal Lancashire, 1934”. The images are carved in high relief and virtually stand out from the flat background. Hallmarks are also demarcated, weighty and large in overall scale.
