Story

Opals have a reputation for mystery. The nature of their composition is such that there can be a never-ending play of colors across the surface or sudden changes of coloration when viewed at different angles. This property is known as “opalescence” .

This oval natural opal of an estimated 1.2 carats is quite intriguing. Unusual, it has a deep blue on the top and bottom yet is streaked with a bright field of neon green across the interior. At some angles the gem appears as a milky blue grey yet as you begin to move it around the flat cabochon flashes with this amazing electric green. The opal is set in a 14k yellow gold mounting with a slightly beaded bezel and openwork patterned surround. The pierced and open under gallery delights with gentle sweeping curves and stylized foliate forms. Light and airy shoulders and sides cast a feminine flavor to a ring of mystery.

Date: Circa 1940.
