Story

Pearls are believed to be the first jewel prized by humankind. These gems of the sea were originally formed naturally by mollusks living in the oceans’ waters. When a minute irritant such as a bit of shell or grain of sand became embedded within, the mollusk encapsulated the offending object in a sac made from its own mantle tissue cells.

The bivalve then secreted a substance which covered the intruder with a build-up of these secretions which resulted in the natural pearl we have come to love and admire. It is amusing when we ponder the existential statement of how an annoying irritant can evolve into an object of beauty and joy.

Philosophy aside, pearls go with any outfit, at any time and anywhere. Always appropriate, pearls have been sewn into clothing, pasted on the body, included in face powder, used for wall decoration and even ingested as a medicinal curative. The magic of the pearl stands alone with its shimmering iridescence and warm inner glow unmatched by many if not all of the gems we refer to as precious.

Here we have a strand of turn-of-the 20th century natural saltwater pearls of a creamy white. In all, twenty (20) glorious inches of pearls graduated from the center in sizes ranging from 2.44 to 5.48 mm. A knot between each secures the integrity of the necklace. Completing the strand with a subtle yet polished look is a silver-topped 14k yellow gold clasp (and base metal insert) set with fifteen (15) old European cut diamonds of an estimated total weight of .22 carats. Rare and divine.

A GIA certificate accompanies the necklace.

Date: Circa 1900.

Being as honest as possible about the items we represent for sale is our ultimate goal! Our pricing is industry recognized as fair and equitable with value as the byword.

Note: Diamond weights are approximated by measurement and formula and may vary from actual if removed. All diamonds are tested in our gemological laboratory. All metals are acid tested.
