In centuries gone by only those of royal or noble blood and high ranking clergy were allowed to wear the color purple. The creation of the dye was an expensive and long drawn out process. It is not an unrealistic reach to see the association between the wearing of purple garments to the coveted use of the purple amethyst for adornment of the body.
Here the luscious color is evident in a round faceted amethyst of an estimated 1.5 carats. Double prong set, the noble gem is enhanced by a lace-like filigree mounting of 10k white color. Feminine and ornate, the contrast of the amethyst and the setting provides for an immediate visual impact.
Date: Circa 1930.
